James, 1st Duke of Ormonde (1610-1688) from 1641 to 1647 led the Royalists against the Irish Catholic Confederates and in 1649/50 was a leading Royalist commander in the fight against the Cromwellians in Ireland. He spent the 1650s in exile in Europe, returning with the Restoration in 1660
